Ami Vitale

Ami is an acclaimed National Geographic photographer, writer, and documentary filmmaker. Her work focuses on the stories of individuals living on the front lines of war, climate change, and extinction, who refuse to let cataclysm define their futures. Through her compelling journalism, she highlights stories of resilience and innovation, emphasizing the delicate balance between humanity and wildlife and the urgent need for conservation. Her work connects viewers to critical local conservation issues of global importance, underscoring our interconnectedness with one another and the natural world.

 

Some of her renowned work include documenting the last male white rhinoceros. Her short film Remembering Sudan documents the heartbreaking crisis facing the northern white rhinos and keepers like Zacharia Mutai, on Ol Pejeta Conservancy, who sacrifice so much to protect them.​ 

 

Another of her works is Panda Love, a collection of photographs documenting the efforts to breed and release giant pandas in China. 

 

Ami is also the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Vital Impacts, which supports humanitarian projects around the world. In just three years, Vital Impacts raised over $3.3 million for local conservation initiatives safeguarding biodiversity.

 

Ami has been called one of the most influential photographers of her generation and is Conservation International's Innovators Fellow. She has been named Magazine Photographer of the Year in the International Photographer of the Year Prize, received the Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding Reporting, and is a 6-time recipient of awards from World Press Photos.
